The last ancient kingdom in a long history of princes and kings, this city is a famous pilgrimage site. Housing the Dalada Maligawa (or Temple of the Tooth), you can witness the seasonal Perahara (or parade) held specifically to honour an age-old custom for the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. This colourful and energetic procession consists of a multitude of performers like flame throwers, dancers, musicians and acrobats. Amongst other attractions are the botanical gardens that will enthrall any lover of flora and fauna, a wondrous museum that displays Sri Lankan history in great detail, a large lake that is ideal for relaxation and walks, and Buddhist and Hindu shrines that will give you a glimpse into some of the many cultural aspects of this country.
